Riverside General Hospital. A woman is rushed to the ER. She can barely answer, her breathing is ragged, blood pressure low. Doctors and nurses are working to keep her alive. To no avail. Minutes later, one nurse begins to experience strange symptoms herself. Then another one follows, until multiple people threaten to collapse.

Who was the woman? And why did this “Toxic Lady” make those around her sick?

ER Visit Ends in a Hazard Zone

Paramedics had brought recently diagnosed late stage cervical-cancer patient 31-year old Gloria Ramirez to hospital due to her deteriorating health condition. When she arrived, her blood pressure had plummeted and her heart was racing. Upon removing her shirt for defibrillation, nurses noticed a strange oily sheen on Ramirez’ body. From the woman’s mouth came an odor described as garlic-like and fruity. A blood sample was drawn and the syringe with her blood on it carried the smell of ammonia. Even more bizarre, manila-colored particles were later on discovered in her blood.

It didn’t stop there. Soon after arrival, her presence led to an even stranger phenomenon. The doctors and nurses started to experience falling sick themselves. One nurse fainted, another struggled to breathe and another one passed out, unable to move her limbs after waking up. Six people in total were immobilized and rendered ill, ranging from nausea to temporal paralysis. Despite the medical staff’s efforts, Gloria Ramirez passed away forty-five minutes after she had arrived at Riverside General Hospital, leaving an aftermath of mysteries to get to the bottom of. Gloria Ramirez became known as “The Toxic Lady”.

Aftermath and Autopsy

After Ramirez’ death, a special team in hazmat suits came to search for poison gas and toxins. Nothing of value could be found during their research. In total, three autopsies were conducted. Signs of Tylenol, lidocaine, codeine and Tigan were discovered in her system. The latter substance, Tigan, is an anti-nausea medication, which was linked to be the likely cause of the ammonia smell of her blood sample due to ammonia-related amines breaking down.

Additionally, large amounts of dimethyl sulfone could be traced in her blood and tissues. At first glance dimethyl sulfone is nothing unusual as it occurs naturally in the human body and disappears within three days. However, in Ramirez’ system three times the usual amount could be found even six weeks after death.

On April 12th ,1994, the official cause of death was ruled heart failure due to kidney failure, resulting from cancer. Due to fear of toxins causing people to faint, her burial was delayed for two months. The strange occurrence at Riverside Hospital was later declared to be mass hysteria.

Toxicity and Theories

Authorities assume Ramirez covered herself in a cream containing DMSO, dimethyl sulfone, as a countermeasure against cancer to alleviate her pain. In the 1960s, DMSO’s reputation and was treated as a promising cure-all substance amongst the public eye before it was finally labelled toxic in 1965. In the 1970s, DMSO could only be found as a degreaser in hardware stories. The degreaser is much more pure and higher concentrated than its predecessor in the 60s, making its effect much more fatal. DMSO in contact with oxygen converts to dimethyl sulfate, a gas that can cause delirium and paralysis. What the ER staff experienced at the hospital was likely them suffering from dimethyl sulfate poisoning. Ramirez’ family denied the use of cream with DMSO but as of today, this theory is the most likely solution to the case.

In the end, Gloria Ramirez’ life could not be saved. Dubbed as “The Toxic Lady” by the public eye and the press, it is easy to overlook the tragic fate and person that she really was: a wife and young mother of two battling cancer who sadly met her death way too soon.

<figure
